How to Delete a Project in Project for the Web (New Planner)

As project managers, we often find ourselves needing to clean up our workspace by removing outdated or unnecessary projects. If you’re using Microsoft’s Project for the Web (also known as the new Planner), here’s a quick guide on how to delete a project.

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Open the project you want to delete in Project for the Web.
  2. Look for the ellipsis (three dots) in the top right corner of the project page.
  3. Click on the ellipsis to open the “More actions” menu.
  4. Select “Project detail” from the dropdown options.
  5. In the Project detail view, click on the ellipsis again.
  6. Choose “Delete project” from the list of options.
  7. Confirm the deletion when prompted.
  • Open the project
  • On top right choose the 3 dots, -> Plan details

–

– Again choose the 3 dots and select delete plan

Important Considerations

Before you hit that delete button, keep these points in mind:

  • Permanent Action: Deleting a project is irreversible. Once deleted, you cannot recover the project or its data.
  • Data Loss: All tasks, assignments, and project information will be permanently removed.
  • Associated Data: If your project is linked to a Microsoft 365 Group, the group will be soft-deleted for 30 days before permanent removal.
  • User Views: Deleting a project will also remove its data from the “Assigned to me” view in Planner and To Do.

For Planner Owners

If you’re a plan owner in Planner, the deletion process is slightly different:

  1. Click the three dots next to the plan name.
  2. Select “Plan settings”.
  3. Choose “Delete this plan”.
  4. Confirm by checking “I understand that this plan and all of its tasks will be permanently deleted” and click “Delete”.

Best Practices

To ensure a smooth deletion process and minimize potential issues:

  • Communicate: Inform all team members about the project deletion.
  • Backup: Consider exporting or backing up important project data before deletion.
  • Review: Double-check that you’re deleting the correct project.
  • Timing: Choose a time for deletion when team members are less likely to be actively working on the project.
