A project controls team on the UK's largest rail programme
Premier Partnership delivers project controls on HS2, the UK’s largest rail infrastructure programme — a project spanning multiple work fronts, contractors, and highly complex, geographically distributed construction packages. On a programme of this scale, schedules aren’t just long, they’re linear: kilometres of track, multiple work fronts progressing in parallel, and a constant risk of physical clashes between activities happening at the same chainage at the same time.
Their project controls team — including a Senior Project Controls Manager — needed genuine, hands-on TILOS capability: not a software walkthrough, but the ability to think in linear terms and use the tool on their own live project.
The Challenge
Schedules lived in P6. Clashes couldn't be seen.
The team’s schedules lived in Primavera P6, built around thousands of activities with no way to visualise where parallel work fronts along the alignment would physically clash. They needed to bring P6 data into TILOS, build a working time-distance model of their own project, and use it to spot and resolve conflicts before they became delays on site — the exact problem a linear schedule is built to solve.

Distance, calendars, activity relationships and time-location views, built live using the team's own work packages.
KM 1.2 — P6 ↔ TILOS data exchange
Set up and troubleshot Excel Data Exchange so the team could move real schedule data between the two tools they use daily.
KM 2.4 — Clash detection, configured and debugged
Including the easy-to-miss setting that silently excludes an activity from being checked — found and fixed live during the session.
KM 3.6 — Activity templates & libraries
Standardising activity types (digging, ballast laying) and reusing them across sectors of the alignment.
KM 4.8 — Resources, baselining & progress reporting
Covered fully within TILOS, so the schedule could be tracked and reported the same way it was built.
KM 5.0 — Two full working days, fully adapted
Delivered live, with pace and depth adjusted in real time to the team's own questions and their live project file.
